The body of the drum features low relief carvings with sculptural carving in the handle. The handle carvings form an S-shape from the profile of hornbill birds which may represent a composite form of bird and cuscus, a small curly tailed marsupial. A single human figure with bent knees is part of the openwork carving. The human figure is comparatively small to the bird forms. A complete bird stands between the human figure and the handle.
